Work has officially begun on our rehearsals for "A Christmas Carol". I'm excited to say that our play this year will push us to learning more things with theatre. The high school in our district has taken on a mentoring role and have graciously allowed us the use of cool gadgets like fog machines, lights, sound systems, and even a dedicated senior embracing the opportunity to be our villainous Scrooge! The mystery of who the actor is playing Scrooge has the kids all in tizzy- it's so much fun letting it be a surprise! But as I continue to remind them daily, "Scrooge knows who Scrooge is!" And when my marvelous senior has less restrains upon their time, they will join us.
While we don't get to play with the new gadgets till much later in November, it is still a wonderful carrot to dangle before us as we head into script readings and the first moments of blocking and set construction.
All in all, we are very blessed with an amazing group of young actors this year. We had a smaller turn out when it came to auditions, and this means that several of our students were double cast into more than 1 role! While excited about the challenges they face, they are a bit nervous to make sure that they don't get their characters confused with each other. :) I have no fears- these students are going to do an outstanding job.
In addition, the play will get some added elements with a full party scene at Mr. Fezziwigs as well as some rewritten script to accentuate such. These were added to be an inclusion of our school's new Intro. to Theatre elective class. There is much work going on behind the scenes and in preparation for the scenes themselves.
We may be a bit over two months out from our opening night, but the excitement is in the air. If you haven't marked your calendars yet- you better do so. I may be biased, but I think these kiddos are going to pull off an incredible show. Dec. 13 & 14, Cortez Middle School. Be there, or face the ghosts of Christmas!
