In many ways this year of craziness with the students of Cortez Middle School is finally wrapping up. Students are taking their final exams, teachers are collecting data on summative assessments, and theatre? Well, theatre is just as crazy as ever!
The past month or two things have been buzzing behind the scenes here on campus. There were words of "yes, you are" and "no, not yet" and "maybe, but wait" all flying at me. Now that this past week is over, I can officially let you in on the coolness about to take place...
1- I, Ms. Bryce, will not be teaching social studies next year.
2- Instead, electives will have me transferred to their region.
3- I will be teaching basic computer skills to 6th and 7th grade.
4- The school administration blessed with graciousness the development of an 8th grade, Intro toTheatre course!!!
The administration of our campus was so impressed with the production our JAG/DAC students presented, that they seriously began to take consideration to the fact that perhaps there IS something to this theatre stuff after all! In the hallways kids were overheard talking about how they wished they could be in theater for school. Parents were remarking how their kids were coming out of their quiet shells; and teachers were commenting that by having something to focus on outside of class- grades began improving!
While there are still things to work out in this venture (such as, where in the heck are we going to even have our classroom?) all I can say is that dreams are coming true around here. One step at a time, and who knows what the future might bring?
